“Oh, stop it. We’re practically an old married couple. Besides, everything I have is thanks to you, isn’t it? This child is something I’ve longed for too. Such words are unnecessary,” she chided gently.
Francis nodded happily, “Yes, you’re right. From now on, you’re the boss at home. Whatever you say goes.”
Madeline never imagined that her mother would get pregnant at such a crucial time. A son could be a powerful ally for them, especially now with Francis basking in the joy of ant unexpected late-life child, ready to give her mother anything she asked for. “Long time no see, Mr. Harris. Still as dashing as ever,” she said, looking up at Nolan with a smile. But to her surprise, his expression was stormy.
“Has work been piling up lately? You seem pretty down for someone out to grab a bite,” she ventured.
Nolan’s lips twisted into a half-smile, “Ms. Tanner, I honestly didn’t expect you to be so thick-skinned. Anyone would be upset by being scammed, right?”
“What?” Regina’s smile froze. She was utterly confused by his words, “Are you mixing things up? What’s this about a scam? We agreed I’d treat you to a meal once I got out of the hospital. We even talked on the phone about it. This one’s on me; you don’t have to pay.”
