Chapter 2799
“Oh, right!”
The tension in the room was palpable, Regina’s heart was in her throat, fearing that everything was just as Nolan had said, that Domingo might have anticipated their clandestine visit, that they might be under surveillance.
She wasn’t afraid for herself, but if it hadn’t been for her invitation, Nolan wouldn’t have been here today.
He was supposed to be the CEO in a sharp suit, sitting in his office, not here risking his neck because of her. It was all her fault.
Nolan, summoning all his strength, delivered a ferocious kick to the door. It shuddered but held firm.
That was when the sound of a loudspeaker crackled to life.
“Mr. Harris, save your energy. Our boss said to have you two wait here for him, he’ll grace you with his presence when he finds the time.”
Hearing the announcement, Nolan actually felt a wave of relief. So, it was Domingo pulling the strings.
Knowing the enemy made him less anxious than before.
Regina shivered at the sound, and as Nolan approached, she hung her head in utter dejection.
“I’m sorry…”
She whispered, her voice barely audible. Nolan was right; she wasn’t cut out to be a journalist.
She was just a rookie, green and unseasoned. Why did she try to tackle such a challenging assignment?
If she hadn’t dragged Nolan here, would he be locked up with her now?
He had his own ways of investigating. He was already on to Domingo, so why did she have to rush things?
Regina’s tears were silent, so Nolan didn’t notice until he crouched before her, her face streaked with them.
“Why are you apologizing?”
“I dragged you into this.” Regina’s eyes were blurred with tears, but she could see that Nolan wasn’t angry at all.
“I’m sorry, you should be comfortably in the Harris Group building, not here suffering with me.”
“Huh,” Nolan chuckled softly. “You really like to take all the blame on yourself. But have you thought about it? Is this really your fault? If it weren’t for Domingo, would we be locked up here? I actually think the situation isn’t so bleak. We were worried that this place was his turf, but now at least we’ve confirmed that. Besides, knowing the enemy makes it easier to deal with him.”
“Is that so? You’re not just trying to make me feel better? If I hadn’t been so impulsive, maybe you would have figured this out by now, and we wouldn’t have had to come here.”
Regina’s tears stopped, but her tone was still full of regret.
“Look, he’s told us he’s coming. We might as well conserve our energy and think about how we’re going to deal with him when he arrives. It’s not good to show them how vulnerable you are too soon.”
With Nolan’s encouragement, Regina sniffed and wiped her face without holding back. “You’re right, it’s Domingo’s fault. I haven’t even seen him yet, and I’m already backing down. That won’t do.”
Nolan looked at this new, resolute Regina with a sense of novelty. Just moments ago she was a picture of sorrow, but now, after a few words from him, the gloomy vibe was cleared.
