Chapter 2763
The boss didn’t engage with him as usual; instead, he gave him a cursory glance before shifting his gaze to the others in the room.
“You all still remember the oath we took when we first joined the ranks of journalism, right? Do you still remember what our primary duty is?”
“I remember.” Regina silently answered in her mind, “To honor the truth, to respect the public’s right to know the truth, that is the foremost duty of a journalist.”
Everything she was doing now was in fulfillment of that very vow she had taken.
But while taking the oath had been simple, putting it into practice was another story entirely. The path to becoming a true journalist was fraught with obstacles and hardships.
“I trust none of you have forgotten our primary duty. But as time goes by and as we become more seasoned in our careers, I see some of us seem to have forgotten why we set out in the first place.”
The boss slammed a newspaper down on the table with a thud. The meeting room fell silent; no one dared to make a sound. Although they were clueless about what had triggered the boss’s anger, the tension was palpable.
“It’s normal for there to be some discord among colleagues; I never interfere too much. I tell newcomers to respect their seniors, and I remind you seniors to mentor the rookies. It’ll benefit you in the long run. However, it seems some have taken advantage of their seniority to bully the newcomers without restraint. Is this what I taught you?”
Ahab felt a lurch in his stomach, unsure why the boss was bringing this up now.
But if one were to point fingers at who was bullying the rookies the most, it was him.
Regina was puzzled – who was the boss criticizing?
Looking around at the atmosphere, it certainly couldn’t be her.
“Tell me, Ahab, do you think my words are fair?” the boss continued.
Ahab’s forehead broke into a cold sweat. “Of course, Boss, you’re absolutely right. It’s just that some rookies… they don’t know their place and talk back to their seniors. I believe that’s when we have to assert our authority to keep them in line, or else they might start thinking too highly of themselves.”
“It seems you have quite the insight into disciplining the newcomers. Why don’t you share your thoughts with us?”
The boss’s voice was authoritative, and Ahab had no choice but to speak up.
“Well, actually, I think we, as seniors, should be more tolerant. I usually am, but sometimes the rookies can be so ungrateful that we need to check their arrogance a bit, make them aware of their place, and what they should be doing…
Of course, in essence, it’s all out of concern for the rookies. I’m sure with time, they’ll come to appreciate our guidance.”
“Clap!” The only clapping in the conference room came from the boss. He stood up, walked behind Ahab, and laid a heavy hand on his shoulder, pressing him back into his seat.
“None of you object, so I take it this is how you all handle things usually, huh?”
Regina wore a disdainful smirk. Some shared her contempt for Ahab’s methods, but most went with the flow.
After all, Ahab’s behavior didn’t infringe on their interests, so why not turn a blind eye?
And with Ahab’s family connections, what could they do even if they disapproved? Surely, they weren’t going to risk their own careers for someone like Regina.
