Mara seemed deaf to Balfour’s words, her grip on his hand unyielding.
“Balfour, I know you’re mad because I took those photos without your knowledge, and I’m sorry, okay? I didn’t mean to. Please don’t push me away.”
Her words tumbled out in a messy apology, “It’s my fault this time, and I won’t ever do it again. Can you just not say things in anger? I get you’re upset, but don’t hurt me with those words. Don’t you remember what you promised my sister? Balfour, you can’t leave me behind! Without my sister, without my dad, I have nothing, and now are you going to abandon me too?”
Seeing her cry so pitifully, Balfour was at a loss for what to do.
After her sister Victoria passed away, it wasn’t long before her father had an accident.
Victoria died for Balfour, and Balfour couldn’t bear to neglect her only remaining sister.
Mara initially aimed to garner sympathy from Balfour, but as she wept, her own grief became real.
Why was it that everything she wanted was always taken by others? First, it was her sister, and now Ivy!
Mara brooded viciously, resolving that just as she had replaced her sister back then, she could do the same to Ivy.

“Cut it out. I’ve never forgotten what I promised Victoria. I said I would look after you, and I will. When you find a husband who truly loves you, you’ll see that what you feel for me is just a misunderstanding.”
Balfour’s stoic demeanor only infuriated Mara more.
“Balfour! I’m not a three-year-old. I know the difference between love and friendship. It’s you who’s confused! You mistake your love for me as friendship, and your sense of duty towards that woman as love. No worries, I’ve already taken a leave from the academy, and I’ll spend the entire term back home. It doesn’t matter if your grandparents don’t welcome me; I’ll find my own place to stay. Once I’m settled, one day you’ll realize that it’s me you truly love.”
Balfour furrowed his brow, baffled by Mara’s obsession.
After her outburst, Mara felt dizzier and dizzier until she collapsed onto the bed, her eyelids fluttering shut.
Thinking she had fainted, Balfour stood up and ran to call a doctor.
Only after the check-up confirmed that Mara had merely fainted from the ordeal and

“Mr. Howard,” the doctor chided, “the patient has just suffered a severe trauma, how can you upset her like this? Even if there’s something pressing, you absolutely should not speak to her in such a state. She’s extremely vulnerable right now, and any serious distress could plunge her into a deep coma, or worse, leave her in a vegetative state. If you don’t want her condition to worsen, please ensure that her emotions remain stable.”
