The middle-aged man finally got the picture. “Ah? That fast, huh?”
Patricia didn’t have time to explain to this dimwit. She rushed into the cave to take Baber out of the dog cage and whisk him away.
Other people wouldn’t have found them so quickly, but Ellinor and Theo could. She needed to find a new hideout, pronto.
Baber continued to cry. He was whimpering and shivering uncontrollably.
Patricia couldn’t care less about the child’s feelings. She yanked him out, tied him up with a hemp rope, and then called the middle-aged man to carry the
child..
The middle-aged man was quite reluctant, but the promised hundred grand from Patricia wasn’t in his hands yet, so he had no choice but to comply.
With Baber on his back, Patricia and her accomplice left the cave. Patricia even purposely left the middle-aged man’s phone in the cave, promising to compensate him with a better one.
Barren Mountain was far from the city. Theo and Ellinor arrived two hours later; it was past midnight, and there was barely any light around them.
The mountain was desolate and covered in thick shrubs, with no accessible roads for cars.
Ellinor wanted to start climbing the mountain on foot as soon as they got out of the car to look for her son.
However, Theo stopped her in time. “Let’s calm down. Searching like this is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.”
Calm down?
How could she possibly calm down?!
The thought of Patricia possibly taking out her frustrations on Baber for not being able to have Theo made her feel sick. She had no way of calming down.
“Baber, he…”
Theo held her close while gently patting her back to comfort her. “I know. I’m worried about him too, but let’s wait a little longer. Our people and the police should be here soon.”
Ellinor looked surprised. “Won’t the police’s arrival scare them off?”
Theo squinted. “If I’m not mistaken, we’d already scared them off when the owner made the call. Now, we need to secure this mountain as quickly as possible and let the search dogs do their job. Our cars can’t get up there, and neither can theirs. From the time the owner made that call to now, I bet they haven’t made it down the mountain yet. Please stay by my side. I don’t want to lose you before we find Baber.”
Ellinor found his deduction reasonable. She held onto Theo’s hand tightly, trying to keep herself calm.
Balfour added, “Theo’s right. Ellinor, you can’t panic.”
Ellinor managed to nod in response.
Fifteen minutes later, dozens of black cars pulled up behind theirs, some belonging to the Blanchet family and some to the police.
Since they had communicated earlier, the police cars arrived without their sirens blaring.
Everyone got out of their cars. Some of them even led well-trained search dogs up the mountain. At Theo’s instruction, they began to surround the
mountain.
Only then did Theo lead Ellinor to follow a search dog up the mountain, with Balfour and Byran closely following behind.
The climb was tough, and it was still quite dark. The weak light made it easy to get scratched by thorns.
But these were minor problems for Ellinor. She could endure. She just wanted to find her son as soon as possible.
