Ida felt like she was caught between a rock and a hard place as she released a sigh of defeat. “Mr. Howard, you should be resting. I didn’t mean to disturb you at this time.”
McNeil, with a smile, shook his head. “It’s alright. It’s nice that Byran has a girlfriend now. My spirits are lifted.”
Ida remained silent, giving a slight nod as a gesture of respect. I’ll take my leave then; I’ll come visit again some other time.”
With that, she turned to leave the ward.
Now that his girlfriend was about to leave, Byran quickly said to his father, “Dad, I’m going to walk her out.”
McNeil nodded with a progressive smile on his face. “Sure, go ahead.”
Byran seemed unsure. “Dad, you…”
McNeil understood his son’s concern and shook his head. “Don’t worry, I promise I won’t do anything foolish.”
Only then did Byran feel slightly reassured. He stepped out quickly to catch up with Ida.
In the hospital corridor.
Byran caught up with Ida and took her hand. “Ida, you’re already here; why leave so soon? Can’t you stay with me a bit longer?”
“We haven’t settled the matter of your lies yet, and you’re asking me to stay?”
Byran chuckled awkwardly and rubbed the back of his neck. “Ida, didn’t I already explain? Can’t you see that I lied because I was so eager to see you?”
Ida gave him a cold stare. “A lie is a lie. Don’t muddle it up.”
Byran pouted. “There are different kinds of lies. I won’t lie to you about serious stuff; please don’t be angry.”
Ida huffed. “So you won’t lie about serious stuff, but you’ll lie about other things then?”
Byran had an innocent look on his face. “Well… like when I want to surprise you after we’re married, I have to build some suspense, right? Sometimes, little white lies can add some spice to our relationship.”
Ida was taken aback. “Who agreed to marry you? You’re already dreaming about married life? Byran, aren’t you getting ahead of yourself?”
Byran grinned. “To be honest, I’ve even thought about our children’s names already.”
Ida squinted at him. “Don’t you have anything else on your mind?”
“Of course I do. I’m working hard because I have to support you. I’m also figuring out how to propose to you.”
Ida rubbed her temples. “Enough! Stop wasting time here. Go back and take care of your father. He’s just attempted suicide, so he needs constant attention.”
Byran pouted. “Ida, can’t you really stay with me? I’m bored in the hospital, and my dad keeps asking me to tell him about Ellinor. I’m almost running out of things to say.”
Ida’s expression hardened. “Your dad knows about Ellinor?”
Byran nodded. “Yeah, he does. Ellinor even came to the hospital to visit him earlier and fed him some soup. That’s why he was so calm when you came. It’s all thanks to Ellinor.”
Ida furrowed her brow, thinking about when she ran into Sophia on her way up.
