Chapter 1328
Sophia also flicked on her phone’s flashlight and walked over to Ellinor, asking in a slightly lost tone, “Ellinor, what are we supposed to do now?”
Ellinor was scanning the surroundings intently and replied calmly, “We start searching. Look around for any suspicious items that might have been left behind.”
Sophia nodded in agreement and then looked around at the pitch-black environment.
“But this place is so huge; how are we possibly going to search it all? Plus, the cops already searched the place during the daytime; there probably won’t be any suspicious items left.”
Ellinor thought Sophia was talking nonsense. Hadn’t she thought this through before bringing her here? Wouldn’t it be more productive to use this time to look for clues instead of talking?
Ignoring Sophia, Ellinor bent down to rummage through the rubble of the destroyed building and picked up a reflective item. It turned out to be a piece of scrap metal, which she promptly discarded and continued her search.
Because of her pregnancy, bending over to search was exhausting and made her unstable. Only when she could no longer bear it did she straighten up to take a break. It was at this moment that she heard the voices of two men coming from not too far away.
“Boss, the cops have sealed off this abandoned factory. If you dropped something here after that big explosion, it’s nearly impossible to find it. I suggest we give up and stop looking.”
“Enough with the chatter! Give me the flashlight!”
Ellinor heard the footsteps getting closer and reacted quickly. She swiftly pulled Sophia behind a pillar that had not been completely destroyed.
Sophia was startled, but she quickly calmed down and also heard the conversation between the two men.
“Boss! It’s dark, even with a flashlight. We can’t see clearly; we should stop looking.”
“If you keep talking, you’re out!”
“Okay, I’ll shut up.”
They were hiding in a concealed spot, so Ellinor could not see the men’s faces, but their voices sounded familiar. She felt like she had heard them somewhere.
Just as she was trying to recall, Sophia nudged her and whispered, “Ellinor, could they be the bad guys who hurt Theo?”
Ellinor gave Sophia a cautionary look, signaling her to keep quiet.
The place was too quiet; any noise could give them away.
Sophia promptly nodded and covered her mouth.
The two men seemed to be there for the same reason as them. They were without a doubt looking for something.
Ellinor observed the two men from the shadows, realizing that if she could follow them quietly, she could possibly find some clues.
However, things did not go as planned. They were discovered!
One of the men, a chubby one, suddenly said alertly, “Boss, look! There seems to be a red car parked over there.”
The man who had been searching through the debris with a flashlight straightened up and followed the direction indicated by the chubby guy, finding the red sports car.
“Oh crap! Someone’s here! Find them!”
“Yes, Boss!”
The two men immediately switched from searching for items to searching for people and began sweeping their flashlights all around.
Ellinor instinctively tightened her grip on Sophia’s wrist, keeping a keen eye on the surroundings, ready to make a run for it.
Turned out that Sophia had forgotten to turn off her phone’s flashlight, and the reflection it cast on the car caught the chubby man’s attention.
Ellinor had assumed that, given Sophia’s age, she would be more composed in dealing with situations. She didn’t expect their cover to be blown due to her carelessness.
“Who’s hiding there? Come out!”
“Come out!”
