Chapter 402
“Why?” Lillian couldn’t understand, and in fact, Callum didn’t need to get involved in this mess at all.
Moreover, from a business perspective, the White family’s ventures were now expanding to the part of Strico. It should have been the right time for them to build a good relationship with Jonathan. If Callum offended Jonathan now, the White family’s future development in Strico might encounter many obstacles.
“If I tell you that I don’t care who I offend for your sake, would you believe me?” Callum gazed at Lillian and asked.
In an instant, Lillian felt herself in a daze, as if something was surging in her chest.
“How much of what he’s saying is the truth, and how much is a lie?” she contemplated.
Yet, at this very moment, an overwhelming urge to believe his words seemed to consume her.
Listening to the butler’s report, Carlos learned that Lillian and Callum had already departed from the mansion, and his complexion finally showed a slight improvement.
“Today has been quite chaotic. It appears that everyone wanted to be part of the commotion!” he mused.
However, what concerned Carlos the most at that moment was Jonathan. Since his return from outside, Jonathan had been in the kitchen for a full three hours!
Jonathan stood there, motionless in front of a cake that was nearly complete, staring at it the entire time, leaving people to wonder what was going through his mind.
Carlos couldn’t make sense of it either. He pondered, “Why would Mr. Youngblood, who clearly loves Rosalie so much, suddenly end their relationship today? Could it be due to…. the incident with that psychologist earlier that led to an argument between them? Or… Is there some other reason?”
However, deep down, he understood that no matter the cause, it was not something he, as a subordinate, should inquire about.
Suddenly, Carlos saw Jonathan, who had remained still in the kitchen, raise his hand, refill the pastry bag with buttercream frosting, and then… begin decorating the partially finished cake with delicate buttercream flowers.
“What is… Mr. Youngblood trying to do?” Carlos wondered,
Carlos watched in astonishment until he witnessed Jonathan finishing the cake’s decoration and meticulously positioning 28 candles on it, one by one.
Then, he lit the candles!
It was as if he was celebrating someone’s birthday!
“Is Mr. Youngblood lighting the candles for Rosalie? But the problem is, didn’t they break up? And Rosalie isn’t even here!” Carlos thought.
What Carlos witnessed next was Jonathan blowing out the candles and carefully removing them one by one from the cake.
Afterward, he picked up a small spoon and began savoring the cake, one-spoonful at a time.
“Mr. Youngblood!” Carlos couldn’t hold back and spoke up. “This cake has been sitting out at room temperature for quite a while. Eating it like this could make you sick…”
“Yeah, it has been out for a bit,” Jonathan muttered softly, then continued to eat the cake, bite by bite.
It felt like some sort of ritual.
The rest of Carlos’ words seemed to get lodged in his throat, and he found himself unable to utter another word.
Time crept by, and eventually, Jonathan finished the entire cake. “Carlos, do you ever think there could be someone who has the power to determine whether I live or die?”
“Huh?” Carlos was caught off guard, not anticipating Jonathan to raise such a question out of the blue. “Well no… That’s highly unlikely.”
“I share your belief. It’s highly unlikely,” Jonathan agreed.
“So, there’s no need to dwell on or remember that woman anymore. Let’s just pretend I never loved her. From now on, I don’t have to worry or fear so much. I don’t need to concern myself with whether she goes to Calvin’s side, and I definitely don’t need to speculate about how much room Calvin holds in her heart. I won’t replicate my father’s mistakes, and I won’t let myself become as wretched and forlorn as a stray dog just for the sake of loving someone. Absolutely not!” Jonathan said to himself in his mind.
Then Jonathan finally left the kitchen and ascended the stairs to the second floor by himself.
Caklos watched Jonathan’s retreating figure with mixed emotions.
“If, by any chance, there truly is someone in this world who could have control over Mr. Youngblood’s life and death…”
Carlos pondered. Strangely, at that very moment, Rosalie’s name flashed through his mind.
The next day, when Rosalie woke up, she saw an exquisitely wrapped gift box on her bedside. It was the birthday present Lillian and Callum had given her the previous day.
However, last night, she hadn’t opened it.
Rosalie sat up slowly and unwrapped the package. Inside, she found a delicate little doll that somewhat resembled her, dressed in a lawyer’s outfit and looking incredibly adorable.
There was also a handwritten greeting card inside the box from Lillian that read: [Wishing my dearest Rosalie a lifetime of happiness and joy as you chase your dreams! PS: Give the doll’s left palm a little press for a surprise!]
“Dreams… and happiness? Will I ever have them again?” Rosalie pondered.
Rosalie’s hand found a small button on the doll’s left palm.
She gently pressed it, and the doll’s body produced a voice, saying, “I want to become a great lawyer, fighting for the justice in my heart. Haha, I hope that those who seek my assistance in the future will view choosing me as their lawyer as a wise choice, once their legal battles have concluded!”
It was her own voice!
Those were the words she had once spoken!
Rosalie looked at the doll in her hand with astonishment.
She vaguely recalled that this happened when she had just joined the law firm, and Lillian had come to celebrate with her. Amidst their animated conversation, Lillian had taken out her phone and recorded a video.
At that moment, Rosalie had spoken those words to the camera.
She simply hadn’t anticipated that Lillian would preserve this video all these years, extract her voice from it, and embed it inside this doll.
The doll in Rosalie’s hand suddenly held a deeper significance.
Meeting Lillian in her lifetime was perhaps the greatest stroke of luck she had ever experienced!
When Lillian arrived at the inn to find Rosalie, the latter had already freshened up and changed into clean clothes.
“Today is a normal work day. You didn’t have to come to keep me company. I’m perfectly fine now,” Rosalie remarked.
“What are you talking about? Besides, I’ve already taken a day off today, and even if I return to work now, they’ll still deduct my leave pay,” Lillian responded, noticing the opened gift box and the doll placed on the bedside.
“You’ve already seen the gift? Gee, I was actually planning to open it together with you!” Lillian expressed a tinge of regret. Rosalie smiled gently. “I really like this gift. Thank you, Lillian.”
“I’m glad you like it!” Lillian replied, observing Rosalie’s complexion, which appeared healthy with no signs of dark circles. “What are your plans for the future?”
“I’ll begin by finding a place to live. I can’t stay in this small inn indefinitely. Today, I plan to visit a real estate agency to search for a suitable rental home. Once I’m settled, I’ll head to the law firm and explore opportunities for a suitable job,” Rosalie outlined her intentions.
