Chapter 131
Chapter 131
I didn’t respond, only waited until the storm outside had calmed down a bit before gently moving Neil aside. “The balcony door won’t close, could you give it a shot for me?”
Neil nodded and went to check the door.
The rain was still pouring and the wind hadn’t stopped. After Neil finished checking and closing the balcony door, his clothes were completely soaked, and so was his hair. The sound from the storm outside significantly decreased once the door was closed. I handed Neil a dry towel, “Thanks, dry your
hair.”
Neil took the towel and casually dried his hair. His shirt was mainly wet on the right side, from his shoulder to his lower back. The soaked fabric clung to his body, outlining his muscles that shifted with his movements. I silently pulled my gaze away, assuming that Neil would leave once he finished drying
his hair
“Why did you choose to live here?” Neil suddenly asked.
TI’s close to work and also close to Harold’s place” I simply replied.
“But it’s not very safe here and the facilities aren’t great.” Neil seemed somewhat dissatisfied with the living conditions.
I was surprised, “Then why did you choose to live here?”
He paused for a moment before giving a small smile, “Same as you, it’s close to work.”
Since we had started chatting. I decided to ask a few questions I was curious about. Sitting on the sofa, I asked, “How long is your project here? When are you planning on heading back?”
Neil pondered for a moment before replying calmly, “Not sure. I suppose you’re eager for me to go back, right? Don’t worry, I won’t be a bother?”
I couldn’t help but retort, “You used to say I was the one bothering you”
The atmosphere instantly became awkward, and the air seemed to freeze. I hadn’t intended to bring up the past; the words just slipped out.
Suddenly Neil’s gaze fell onto a small bottle on the coffee table. He reached out to grab it, but I quickly picked it up before he could. He looked puzzled, “What medication are you taking?”
That was the folic acid I was currently taking, I had forgotten to put it away after taking it last night.
I clenched the small bottle in my hand, feeling a bit nervous myself. Then, I attempted to respond calmly, “It’s just some vitamins, prescribed by my doctor. I have a vitamin deficiency”
“Let me see.” Neil reached out his hand.
“No need, it’s my business, you don’t need to worry about it.” I rejected him.
Neil didn’t believe me, and furrowed his brows, “Irene, give me the medication.”
I got up and started walking towards the bedroom, I’m going to sleep, you should go too. Thanks for your help tonight.”
Neil also stood up and followed me. As I tried to close the bedroom door, he blocked it with his hand and I couldn’t close it no matter how hard I tried.
I was getting a bit angry, “Neil, let go!”
“Let me see the medication. I know it’s not vitamins. I want to know about your health Neil was taller than me, and he looked down at me with a serious
expression.
“Why do you care about my health? Let go of me or else don’t blame me for getting rough!” I had no other way to deal with Neil, except with my teeth and nails. Once I finished speaking, I started waving my hands, ready to scratch Neil’s arm.
He reacted very quickly, immediately grabbing my hand, his face darkened, “Are you trying to scratch me again?”
I gritted my teeth and replied, “Then don’t use your strength to bully me.”
Neil frowned, “When did I bully you? I’m just concerned about your health.”
I replied coldly. “I don’t need your concern. The person you should be concerned about is Bonnie.”
Mentioning Bonnie, Neil’s eyes darkened a bit more. He looked at me for a few seconds before giving a self–mocking smile, “You’re right, go to sleep, I’m leaving”
He let go of his hand, the resistance on the door immediately disappeared. The sound of the front door opening and closing quickly came from the living room. I stood at my bedroom door for a while before letting out a tired sigh and returning to bed to continue sleeping.
Suddenly, my phone started vibrating. It was Russel calling. “Are you scared being home alone?”
“A little, but I’m ok now” I answered the phone while checking my messages, only to find that he had called three times and sent several messages
before
The background noise was a bit loud on Russel’s end, unlike Neil’s. He said, “I had to rush back to the hospital for something, and as soon as I arrived, it started pouring. If you’re scared, I can come over now”
“No need, your work is more important. I’m fine now and about to go back to sleep” I quickly replied.
“Alright, go back to sleep” Russel’s voice was steady.
Once the call ended, I kept tossing and turning until dawn. In my current state, I really shouldn’t stay up late, but my mind kept going back to a mix of different things.
I was a bit tired at work the next day, practically forcing myself to concentrate. Orlando came to see me. He said that Kate was being transferred back to the development department.
“With her back, your workload will be a lot lighter, Rena. Your health is more important than work, you know that right?” Orlando looked at very concerned.
He only knew about Bonnie and my relationship, but he didn’t know about the relationship between Kate and Bonnie, so it made sense that he agreed to transfer Kate back. Besides, I did need someone to share my workload and Kate was the best choice
“Ok, got it “I nodded
In the afternoon, Kate was transferred. She greeted everyone in the development department with a smile, but it disappeared when the saw me
I didn’t care, ever since I found out about Kate’s identity, I never thought about being friends with her.
Kate’s desk was still next to mine. As she was organizing the documents on her desk, she quietly asked me, “Bonnie has already resigned. Are you satisfied now?”
“Satisfied “I purposely showed a smug smile, “Believe it or not, I can find a way to get rid of you too
Kate’s face stiffened, apparently she didn’t expect me to be so arrogant. There was a hint of nervousness in her eyes, it seemned she was worried that i could get rid of her. After all, it wasn’t easy for her to get to where she was now.
“Irene, you really rely on your family background to do whatever you want. No wonder Bonnie said she wanted to break up with Neil and give him back to you” Kate finally responded, her tone full of resentment.
I turned to look at Kate, and upon closer inspection, she did look somewhat similar to Bonnie. I felt nothing towards this kind of irony All 1 heard was jealousy. I laughed and said, “Yeah, I do rely on my family background to do what I want. If Bonnie had a background like mine, she could easily marry Neil. But sadly, she just doesn’t cut it.”
Upon hearing this, Kate’s face turned pale as a sheet, as if my words about Bonnie’s misfortune were a subtle hint to her as well. Initially, Karina was also rejected by the Whitmore family due to her family background, which was a brutal fact.
