Xiao Su was stunned. “Young Master Ye, did I do something wrong?”
Ye Moxuan pursed his lips and slowly responded after giving it some thought, “Have you been working for me for many years?” Even though he had lost his memory, he could tell that Xiao Su understood many of his habits and could work well with him. For example, Xiao Su was able to figure out what was on his mind by his one look or one gesture. That was why Ye Moxuan reckoned that he must have been working for him for many years.
Xiao Su nodded. “Yes, Young Master Ye.”
“Am I still a kind boss if I never did anything for you given all the years you have been with me?”
Xiao Su responded, “Uhm, Young Master Ye?”
“The opportunity is yours; if you fail to make it work, that’s on you.” After finishing his sentence, Ye Moxuan gave him a knowing look and left. He never wanted to meddle; at least not until Han Muzi worriedly told him about it when she went back to the room and had lunch with him earlier today. Ye Moxuan even told her to stay out of other’s love affairs.
Han Muzi told him that she knew that was not her business, but she still felt bad as these people were close to her. Then, Ye Moxuan was briefly made to understand the details of the matter. He was biased, as Xiao Su worked for him. So, he decided to help Xiao Su out. But he had no say as to how it would end up.
Xiao Su felt slightly bitter as he saw Ye Moxuan walk away from him. Ye Moxuan’s words agitated him; he almost responded to him saying that his situation was the same as his too—bumpy and full of obstacles. Why was he now implying that Xiao Su was useless?
After everyone left, Xiao Su sat on the couch for a while and Yan was seen opening the door. “Eh, aren’t you going out?” She was surprised to see Xiao Su. She was probably wondering why he did not leave together with Ye Moxuan. As such, she asked, “Aren’t you… going with Young Master Ye?”
Xiao Su blandly responded while looking at Yan’s eyes, “That’s a family gathering. Why should I be there?”
Yan replied, “You’re right. It’s for the same reason that I’m not going.” There must be a lot of important talks taking place during a big family gathering, so Yan felt that it would be awkward for her to be there. In the end, she decided not to turn up. Her initial plan was to grab something to eat at this point, but she did not expect to bump into Xiao Su. She was surprised as well as embarrassed because he seemed to be upset at her during lunchtime.
Xiao Su did not respond, and that made Yan feel embarrassed. She walked toward him and hesitated before saying. “About this afternoon… I didn’t mean it. Please don’t worry; I’ll speak well of you in front of the Young Lady of your house; even if I don’t, I’ll make sure she does the same for you in front of Young Master Ye.”
“Mm-hmm.” Xiao Su nodded, finally agreeing to it.
Yan continued, “Also, the jacket you lent me this morning, I’ll clean it and return it to you! Thanks so much.”
“Sure.” Xiao Su nodded. His voice was shallow and bland.
Yan felt strange because Xiao Su seemed to be particularly reticent today. “You’re not… still mad at me, are you?”
Mad? Xiao Su looked up and glanced at her. “Why would I be mad?” The irony was that he did not even have the right to be mad; he could only feel depressed on his own.
“Because… I ignored you. I didn’t mean to, but Han Qing is too important to me. So—”
“Is he that important?” Xiao Su interrupted her. “So important that you can’t live without him?”
Yan was shocked. Can I really not live without him? She had never asked herself this question, so she was taken aback when Xiao Su confronted her with this question. She liked Han Qing, and it was always one-sided. She never thought about any future with him, nor did she ever consider what the consequences might be before she decided to pursue him. Nothing was under her consideration. She did not even know whether she really could not live without him.
Shaking her head, Yan whispered, “I don’t know if I really can’t live without him, but… right now I just want to do whatever it takes to be close to him and be with him.”
These heartfelt words were supposed to be moving. But when Xiao Su heard them, they became hurtful and sarcastic. Did I stay back just to listen to this? No. Definitely not.
Right now, there was a voice within—a voice that was telling him to fight for it and fight for himself, and to win her over before that man accepted her; a voice that told him he should not give up as long as he still stood a chance. The voice within him urged him for a long time, but Xiao Su was still not taking any action. He closed his eyes, burying away all his feelings and emotions.
The room went quiet. Yan suddenly felt embarrassed, so she covered up her mouth with her hands. Did I even hear myself… She just confided in a man. Something was wrong here.
“Also, I’m heading out to grab something to eat. Do you want to come with me?”
Since Xiao Su was still mad at her, she would not be surprised if he rejected her invitation. While Yan was thinking about it, Xiao Su unexpectedly stood up. “Let’s go. What are we getting?”
“We’ll see when we’re out there.” Yan then went back to grab a jacket, and she also took a beanie and a scarf with her due to the cold—she looked like a dumpling when she came out of the room.
Even then, Xiao Su did not feel that there was anything wrong with her dressing in this way. Then, they proceeded to go outside to look around. Seeing how she was looking around, Xiao Su took out his phone and looked up what to eat. He then said, “There’s a food street nearby not too far away from us. Do you want to check it out?”
Yan’s eyes lit up as she heard that. “Food street? Sounds great. Are we walking there?”
“It takes around fifteen minutes. If you feel that’s too far—”
“Not at all. If walking for fifteen minutes gets us good food, then it’s not too far.”
Xiao Su kept quiet. This woman is such a foodie. After the two had arrived at the food street, Yan began buying all kinds of food from the stalls. Walking behind her, Xiao Su smiled as he saw how happy she was. If he could continue living this happy moment with her, it would be great. But it was a shame that the happy moments would have to end here; that smile would probably vanish after this. The thought of this saddened Xiao Su.
“Xiao Su, let’s go to that barbeque place and get some beer.”
Yan called on Xiao Su suddenly when he was deep in thought. Xiao Su then looked over and raised his eyebrows. “Beer?”
