“What’s the matter if she hasn’t got into university? It’s not a marriage, but just an engagement. It’s like making a contract for the relationship between the two of you. As long as the both of you are engaged, she will not face nasty gossips when you bring her out to have fun. Both of you can then get married after graduation.”
Hearing those words, Yuchi Yishu’s expression changed.
“Are you sure this is the life she wants?”
Her mother was quiet for a moment before she said, “Don’t you know that Yuanyuan likes you?”
It was Yuchi Yishu’s turn to be silent.
“She has been fond of you since she was a child. It was impossible for you not to feel it. Besides, it was my plan since the start to let the both of you be childhood sweethearts and then be partners when you grow older. I was the one who raised you, and I can clearly see whether you have feelings for her.”
Yuchi Yishu frowned. “So what?”
“So what? Since the both of you have feelings for each other, what’s wrong with an engagement now?”
“Of course there’s a problem.” Yuchi Yishu was not satisfied with the outcome. “She has just turned into an adult. I know she used to like me, but what about the future? I dare not impose this engagement on her and let her accept these things in a daze. What would happen if one day she suddenly realizes that the sense of belonging she has always wanted could not be found in me? Wouldn’t that be a bigger issue?”
Upon hearing that, Han Muzi was at a loss for words.
After a long time, Han Muzi asked Yuchi Yishu seriously, “Well, what do you think you need to do now?”
“Give her some time, she has just become an adult.”
“Okay, since you insist, I won’t force you either. Decisions should be made based on Yuanyuan anyway.”
“So I shall send her back to Tang’s residence?”
“Sure, I’ll pass your words over to the Tang family.”
After Yuchi Yishu dropped the call, he let out a sigh. He was really worried that if both his and Tang Yuanyuan’s parents got together, they would really make an engagement between the both of them.
Once they’re engaged, the nature of many things would change too.
He would need to take the time to reevaluate how he felt about her since she had become an adult.
Yuchi Yishu leaned against the wall and closed his eyes tiredly.
“Hi, sir. Is there anything that I can help you with?”
The staff member at the convenience store noticed that he had been standing there for so long and he didn’t seem to be buying anything, so she walked over and asked him.
The moment Yuchi Yishu opened his eyes to look at the worker, she was amazed by his handsome face and wasn’t able to regain her senses for a moment.
“Give me two bottles of mineral water, thank you.”
“Oh, sure.”
It took a while for the staff member to be able to find her own voice again. She didn’t even ask him what brand he was looking for before she gullibly took two bottles from the shelf and gave them to him. After Yuchi Yishu paid, she watched him leave the store, just to realize that there was a beautiful lady waiting for him in the car outside the store.
Lying by the car window, the lady smiled when she saw Yuchi Yishu coming back.
The worker sighed. Sure enough, most outstanding men are taken.
After starting the engine, Tang Yuanyuan asked curiously, “Yishu, why did it take you so long just to get water?”
“I received a phone call earlier.”
“Was it a call from Aunty Han? What did she tell you?”
Yuchi Yishu clearly would not tell her that their parents were preparing to discuss the marriage between the both of them. Such things would only affect her thoughts and judgement toward her feelings.
“She asked me when I was sending you home, so I told her we are on the way.”
There was nothing suspicious about what he said, Tang Yuanyuan blushed and did not answer.
On the way back, Tang Yuanyuan realized that many things along the roads were ruined by last night’s flood, and the roads were filled with mud. There were also workers clearing the roads in their boots.
Looking at the scene, Tang Yuanyuan remembered how Yuchi Yishu carried her and walked through the flood last night. She was so embarrassed that she ended up forgetting about it.
“Oh, Yishu. Is your leg itchy?”
“Hmm?”
“It was the rainwater from the night before. It was very dirty. If your leg is feeling itchy, you have to see a doctor. I once heard that some people’s feet would get an infection if they were soaked in rain water, so be careful.”
Yuanyuan looked at Yuchi Yishu’s feet while she said that.
Yuchi Yishu took one of his hands off the steering wheel and caressed her head. “Don’t worry. Don’t forget who I am. I’m not that weak.”
“Anyway, if I feel unwell, I would definitely go for a checkup before you get the chance to be worried about me.”
“Okay.”
Yuchi Yishu was driving toward Tang’s residence. Meanwhile, the Tang couple who had heard about Yuchi Yishu’s thoughts hurriedly got in the car to get back to their residence.
On their way home, Mr Tang was disappointed.
“I thought we could arrange a marriage for our daughter, but I didn’t expect Yishu to reject our arrangement. Although his words seemed sincere, is he really doing this for the sake of our daughter, or is he finding an excuse to shirk?”
Hearing that, Mrs. Tang glared at Mr. Tang.
“What do you mean he’s finding an excuse to shirk? Do you really have no confidence in our own daughter? Our Yuanyuan is so cute and pretty, so who wouldn’t fall for her? Besides, it’s been so many years. Don’t you understand what kind of person Yishu is? If he really doesn’t like her, he would’ve rejected her instead of saying something so thoughtful. Mrs. Tang was as tough as usual. Mr. Tang avoided her fists and pursed his lips. “What are you angry about? I’m just worried about our daughter. I’m afraid she will suffer from injustice or won’t be able to find a good partner. ”
“Nonsense! Stop saying all these demoralizing words and tell me it’s for the sake of your daughter. Please just shut your mouth. We’ve known Yishu since he was a child and we’ve watched him grow into a man that he is now. Since he was able to say something like that, I’m sure he has feelings for our daughter. I think he’s just not too sure about how he feels. Plus, Yuanyuan had just grown up, and I think what he said made sense. It’s better to have concerns about what will happen in the future. I like Yishu very much, and it would definitely be a good thing if he could be my son-in-law. However, if Yuanyuan was really like what he said—that she’s yet to figure out her feelings and might not want to be with him in the future—then I would rather prioritize the happiness of my own daughter. ”
“Yuanyuan’s happiness would clearly be the most important thing. After all, she’s our only daughter.”
“Let’s get home as soon as possible. Yuanyuan has been out for a whole night, she must be missing us when she returns.”
