“Xiao Su, you can only blame yourself for this because you chose to be with her before you took care of your issues. When you first started dating Jiang Xiaobai, didn’t you feel that things weren’t going too well, and you weren’t expecting too much from it? Han Muzi’s impeccable words pierced right through Xiao Su’s heart, rendering him speechless. They, however, prompted Xiao Su to realize an important thing about this incident—this was not the first time he went to save Yan’s life. During the fire incident, he braved the fire to rescue Yan, which caused him to be badly injured. When Yan saw how badly injured he was, she felt extremely bad for him. Jiang Xiaobai never forgot this, even though she had forgiven him at that time. Now that the same situation happened again, there was no guarantee that Xiaobai would still forgive him. At this juncture, Xiao Su was in deep remorse. As much as he would like to dwell on his remorse, there was no way he could change what happened.
“These words are from the bottom of my heart. If something like that happened to me and Ye Moxuan—”
Before she could finish, Ye Moxuan interrupted her, “Stop saying that. Why would I ever leave you behind to save another woman? I wouldn’t even give them a second glance, much less rescue them.”
Han Muzi was just trying to make a point to Xiao Su using her and Ye Moxuan as an example, hoping that he could see things better. She was not trying to imply that something would indeed happen to her and Ye Moxuan. She could not help but give Ye Moxuan a look and stated, “Did I say it was going to happen? It’s just an illustration. Why are you reacting like that?”
“Oh.”
“Or, are you hiding something?”
“How’s that even possible?” Ye Moxuan put his arm around her shoulder. “My dear wife, only someone as dumb as Xiao Su would do something like this. I understand well that my wife means the most to me.”
Xiao Su was speechless after being referred to as dumb. Young Master Ye, can’t you cut me some slack? We’re in the middle of a phone conversation. If you really want to criticize me, can’t you wait until we’re done with this conversation? This annoyed Xiao Su.
Later, he heard Ye Moxuan’s comment from the other end of the phone. “Xiao Su, did you hear what I just said?”
“Uh-huh,” Xiao Su responded, albeit feeling slightly downcast.
“Don’t you think that you’re dumb? No matter what the circumstance is, remember to always choose your own wife.” This was something that Ye Moxuan learned the hard way.
“Alright. Just shut up.” Han Muzi pushed Ye Moxuan away and continued, “What I was saying earlier about the illustration goes like this: if something like that happened to me and Ye Moxuan, I’d definitely choose to separate with him for a while for some personal space to calm down.”
“And after that?” This was what worried Xiao Su the most. He feared that after they had calmed down, Jiang Xiaobai would never want to talk to him again.
After that? Han Muzi responded blandly, “That will depend on how much she loves you.”
Xiao Su’s heart skipped. “Young Lady Ye, what do you mean by that?”
“That means if she really loves you, nothing can tear you two apart, and she’ll come back to you after the cooling period. But if she doesn’t love you that much, after realizing what she really wants in this process, she probably won’t come back to you anymore.”
Xiao Su paused after hearing the latter sentence. Even, Ye Moxuan, who had been laughing at Xiao Su’s misery earlier, looked at Han Muzi with a serious look on his face now.
Having seemingly noticed the silence from the other end of the phone, Han Muzi sighed. “That’s how fate works sometimes. I understand that you don’t want her to leave; otherwise, you wouldn’t have employed tricks like hurting yourself to make her stay. But, Xiao Su, the psychological pain and suffering that she’s going through right now are much worse than what you can imagine. For her to stay makes the both of you suffer. Do you understand me?” Xiao Su remained silent. Han Muzi added, “If nothing you do works anymore, why don’t you try my suggestions? Sometimes letting her go doesn’t necessarily mean that she’ll be gone. The compromise that you make now may bring her back. Does it make sense?”
Before waiting for Xiao Su to respond, Ye Moxuan commented gently, “I believe he has heard everything. But he probably needs some time to think it through. Let’s give him some time.”
Agreeing with Ye Moxuan, Han Muzi nodded and hung up the phone. After the call, Han Muzi contemplated for a moment. “Was I being too harsh? Do you think Xiao Su will be able to get through this?”
“That’s not something you should be worried about since you’ve done your best to break things down for him. Now, it’s on him to make the decision.”
Ye Moxuan was right. No one could decide for anyone. Even though Han Muzi had her own views, at the end of the day, she was not Xiao Su. She could only offer her suggestions and let Xiao Su make his own decision.
At this point, Han Muzi handed Ye Moxuan’s phone back to him. “He has definitely made a mistake. If you did something like this one day, I’d never forgive you.”
“Not a chance.” After taking the phone from her, Ye Moxuan placed it on the table, went up to Han Muzi, and wrapped his hands around her. “Even if every man under the sun did this, I’d never do it.” His voice became deeper while he drew closer to her red lips. “You’ll forever be the only one to me.”
“Just talk properly, don’t—mmph.”

After hanging up the phone, Xiao Su sat back in his chair. Before the phone call, his mind was all over the place, but right now he felt that it was quiet and calm around him, and the scattered thoughts in his mind began to come into place. If it were not for Han Muzi’s reminder, Xiao Su had almost forgotten about the fire incident. He reckoned what happened then must have left a deep impression on Xiaobai. The incident was like a seed sown into her. Before anything in particular happened, this seed would remain a seed. But when something particular happened, it would no longer remain as a seed; it would now sprout and grow in Jiang Xiaobai’s heart.
No matter how regretful or painful he was feeling at this moment, he could never go back in time. Did he really want to let her leave, so that both of them could have some time to themselves? If so, what about him? And what about the baby?
