Yan was unable to lift her head after being berated sentence after sentence by Luo Huimei; she was feeling extremely regretful. She felt like she had not been proactive enough in looking after her children, and Han Qing was the one who woke up every night to change their diapers and feed them. By the time she thought about it, he had already done everything.
“That’s enough, Mom.” Yan felt personally responsible now. She decided that once they got home, she would take her two children and sleep in a different room. She would look after them on her own every night, and do the same during the day. Besides, she did not have to go to work for the time being. Before the two children were able to move around on their own, she felt like she had to look after them well. Moreover, her parents were helping out with the ramen restaurant, so she had some income.
With that being said, she had to let Han Qing get the rest he needed. Once was more than enough for something like this to happen. There can never be a second time.
“Do you think I’m still nagging you? I might nag, but I’m only thinking of the best for both you and Han Qing. Here, let’s do this. When we go home this time, your dad and I will look after the children. They only need to drink milk now anyway, so your dad and I will take care of them. You can go back to work at the ramen restaurant and Han Qing can continue working as usual too. Neither of you will have to worry about the children.”
Yan groaned at her mother in discontentment, “But, Mom—”
“What? You don’t feel assured leaving your children with me and your dad? You were raised by me. I have more experience than you in taking care of children.”
“It’s not that I don’t trust you guys. But I’m a first-time mother and he’s a first-time father, and these children are our treasures. We want to take care of them ourselves.”
“Take care of them yourselves? But you need to be capable of that first. You can earn a lot of money, but if your body doesn’t function anymore, then what’s the point? If you two want to take care of your children, then be serious about it. You want to look after them and go to work at the same time. How is that possible? Your body is not made of steel. Anyway, it’s decided. Either I look after the kids, or you two stop going to work.” Luo Huimei did not sound like she was going to debate this.
When Han Qing woke up, he heard the both of them arguing. In the end, Yan lowered her voice and said, “Okay, Mom. You can look after them if you want. Han Qing is still unconscious, so keep your voice down. Don’t disturb him.”
“Oh, looks like you know how to feel sorry for him now. When he was up in the middle of the night making milk formula and still going to work during the day, how did you not feel sorry for him then?” Goodness, gracious. This girl sure is something. Luo Huimei was baffled by her own daughter.
Han Qing’s fingertips twitched as he looked at the woman standing by his bedside. She was still wearing the same clothes from yesterday. Her hair was a mess, and the circles under her eyes were dark. She looked extremely worried and haggard. It looks like she’s been here since the accident happened. Because his mother-in-law was also present, he shut his eyes once more.
A while later, Luo Huimei pressed, “Okay, okay. Staying here for one night won’t be enough. He’s not going to wake up anytime soon. You should go home and shower, then rest for a bit before coming back again tonight.”
Yan shook her head adamantly. “Mom, I’m going to stay here until he wakes up. I already ate, so I have energy now. Can you not force me please?”
“Little brat. Do you think I’ll still force you if you weren’t my own daughter?”
“That’s enough, Mom! The two kids at home still need you to look after them. I’ll just leave them to you then. I can stay here by myself. It’s not like I’m not getting any sleep either. Muzi helped me keep watch for half the night, so I was able to get a few hours of sleep. If I get tired later, I will take a nap here. It’ll be fine.”
One way or another, she was finally able to get rid of Luo Huimei. Exhausted, she let out a sigh. Before she turned back around, a raspy voice said from behind her, “That was tough.”
Her heart thumped. This voice… She quickly turned around and was met with Han Qing’s clear eyes. “You’re up! Does it feel uncomfortable anywhere?” She hurriedly went up to him. When she ran up to the side of his hospital bed, she looked at him with eyes full of eagerness and care.
However, Han Qing noticed her bandaged leg, and her steps sounded uneven as she made her way over. Immediately, he frowned. “Did you get hurt?”
“You just woke up. Do you feel pain anywhere? I’ll go get the doctor, just in case there’s a problem.” She got up hastily, but he held onto her slender wrist. “What is it?”
“I’m fine.” His voice was lower than normal. He gazed at her leg and wanted to sit up, but she pushed him back down by his shoulders.
“Don’t get up yet. You just woke up. It’s best to get the doctor to come check on you first. It’s safer that way.” She was genuinely concerned for his safety.
However, he pressed on, “You’re worrying excessively. There’s nothing wrong with me now. Just tell me this: did you hurt your leg?”
She bit her bottom lip. With an awkward look, she explained, “I just sprained it by accident. It’s not bothering me.”
“Sprained it?” He disregarded her prohibitions and sat up. Because he used too much strength, he started to feel a blunt pain in his head. He stopped moving and did not dare to sit up any further.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.” He sat in silence for a while, then reached out toward her. “Sit here and let me see the injury on your leg.”
She wanted to refuse him, but the look on his face did not allow for questioning, so she just sat down. “I accidentally sprained it when I was running. When you were still unconscious, I already went to see a doctor to realign my bones. I just have to keep it bandaged for a few days, then my leg will be fine.” She watched him carefully as she spoke. “So, you don’t have to worry about my injury. Yours is more serious right now.”
He grabbed hold of her restless leg and said gently, “There’s nothing more important to me than you.”
Yan felt like someone had pounded on her heart; it felt weak and numb. She knew that it was not the time for a heart-fluttering moment, but she could not help it. Han Qing proceeded to check over her injury carefully and only felt at ease when he was done. “Did you fall because you ran over hastily after receiving news about me?”
“You’re right on point.” She thought he was incredible. He was not there to witness it for himself, but he knew her every move and behavior.
“Stupid.” After she admitted it, Han Qing reached out to knock her on the head once; it really hurt. Yan was not prepared for such a strong blow. She was in pain for a while before she came back to her senses and cradled the part of her head where she was hit. “It hurts.”
“It hurts?” He looked at her in a funny way. “Is your reaction time that long? Does it only hurt now?”
