The makeup artist was very angry; she charged forward at her young assistant and wanted to hit her. The young assistant was so scared that she kept dodging while moving backward.
“Did you bring the cream mask?”
The young assistant nodded timidly. “Yes.”
She took it out from her bag. “Officer, I’ve brought all the stuff. However, may I ask what’s going on over here? Even though I was being greedy and stole these, it’s just some cream mask. I won’t get arrested because of such a petty thing, right?”
The police officer took the cream mask from the young assistant before giving her a look. “We won’t arrest you. You have no business here anymore—go and wait outside first.”
“Oh.” The young assistant glanced at the makeup artist helplessly before she went out while lowering her head fearfully.
In fact, the matter was very simple. The two persons who had gone into the room that day were the suspects. Since a huge amount of money had been deposited into the makeup artist’s account from unknown origins, she became the main suspect of the investigation.
The makeup artist had already been feeling guilty in the first place; otherwise, she wouldn’t have run away. After all, it was her first time doing something like that, and she was scared for her life. When the young assistant brought the cream mask over, she became so frightened that her lips started to tremble.
W-Why is this happening? I thought all I needed to do was to change the cream mask and just pretend like nothing had ever happened—I would’ve been able to get away with it. Why is this different from what I’ve expected?
The police officer seemed to have noticed her fear, so he passed the cream mask container to his man and said, “Run a test on this.”
Then, he looked at the criminal makeup artist and said, “There’s no way you can escape from the punishment of law if you’ve done something wrong. Once you’re involved in criminal activity, everyone will know what you have done sooner or later; you can’t keep it a secret forever.”
The makeup artist’s eyes became reddened with tears. She confessed instantly, “I’m sorry, officer. I was confused and made a mistake; it was that person who gave me the mask. He said I’ll get a large amount of money if I switched to this brand of mask. Back then, I didn’t think he was going to harm anyone either, so I agreed to it.”
“Do you think I’m a three-year-old boy? Why would he give you so much money if he did not plan on harming anyone? You’re already a mother, it’s impossible that you don’t have such a basic common sense. You clearly knew that he was going to harm someone, but you got greedy.”
The makeup artist fell into the chair, losing all of her energy.
In the end, the makeup artist ratted out the man who made a deal with her. When officers at the police station found out the person was actually He Lianjing from the He Group, they were very shocked.
Why would the young master of He Group want to kill Han Qing’s new bride? Later on, as the police officers continued with their investigation, they discovered that most of He Group’s main businesses were located overseas. Although the Han Group had developed their business overseas too, the two families operated their respective businesses separately without interfering much with each other’s businesses; after all, both families were involved in completely different industries.
Therefore, the officers were very puzzled by that. They had no choice but to go and look for the person responsible for the crime.
When the police officers found He Lianjing, he didn’t try to hide or escape at all; it was as if he knew the police would find him. Perhaps, he even did it on purpose. With his influence and power, even though he couldn’t leave without a trace at all, He Lianjing could’ve at least created many fake clues to confuse the police and stall their investigation.
However, he didn’t do so; the case was solved easily. When the police officers questioned He Lianjing, he confessed to his crime straight away.
“Why? President Han and Ms. Zhou do not have any grudges against you. Why did you want to burn her alive?”
He Lianjing sneered at the police officer when he heard that. He smirked as he said, “I don’t need any reason to do anything—I’ll burn her alive if I want to. What are you going to do about that?”
The police officers looked grim.
“Mr. He, are you saying that you were the one who did this?”
“Uh-huh, I was the one who did it.”
After that, He Lianjing was taken away while several police officers discussed it among themselves.
“What’s going on? He doesn’t seem to be afraid at all. Did he know that he was going to get caught when he committed the crime?”
“Hmph! Young people can be so obnoxious and arrogant sometimes. He needs to bear the consequences once he commits a crime. He’ll be sorry after he is punished later!”
Since it was the young master of the He Group who had been imprisoned, the incident was soon reported in the newspapers. When it appeared on the news, the already worried Xu Yanwan became more concerned when she saw that He Lianjing had gone to prison.
Before this, she thought that whatever He Lianjing did was all his own business; it served him right even if he died.

“I thought you wouldn’t want to see me again for the rest of your life.”
Looking at the current He Lianjing, Xu Yanwan bit her lower lip and asked in a low voice, “Why? Why did you do it exactly? I remembered I stopped you before, but why did you do it again? Don’t you know this is a society governed by law now? You have to go to prison if you committed a crime. Are you happy now?”
He Lianjing gazed at her quietly. After a pause, he sighed and said, “Yeah, you’re right. You stopped me once before. But, you were still very unhappy, so…”
“So, you set the place on fire and try to burn her alive? Do you think I’ll be happy after you kill her in a fire? He Lianjing, what kind of education did you receive when you were younger to have your moral conscience so twisted like that? You want to destroy everything when you can’t have things your way? Just like all your ex-girlfriends, you’ll kick them away once you grow tired of them. For those who keep pestering you, you treat them in a cruel manner. Now, you treat others like how you treat your ex-girlfriends too! Do you think I’ll be grateful to you because you did this? No, I won’t! It will only make me hate you! All the pointless stuff you did will just burden me!”
Perhaps it was his first time seeing Xu Yanwan getting so worked up, or maybe it was the first time he had heard her talking so much to him, so he just looked at her quietly.
After a long pause, he lowered his eyes and said, “Is that so? Have you started to hate me now? I’m sorry. Watching you being alone all by yourself, I thought I’d just do something for you. However, you’re always unhappy whenever I get closer to you, so I could only do this.”
“You just want to do something for me? There are so many ways you can help me, but why did you have to choose such a radical way? The bottom line is that you’re just a radical man with a cruel personality. A person like you is just so terrifying.”
Suddenly, He Lianjing looked at her and smiled. “What are you afraid of? I’m not going to hurt you anyway; you are the only woman whom I, He Lianjing, will ever love in my life.”
“That’s enough.”
Xu Yanwan stood up. She couldn’t bring herself to continue the conversation with him anymore. “I came to talk to you about moral conscience, and you’re discussing love with me. For someone like you who looks down on other people’s life and doesn’t even respect your own life, what right do you have to say that you love me?”
As she finished, Xu Yanwan turned around and left, refusing to look at He Lianjing anymore.
Glancing after her, He Lianjing lowered his eyes and stared at his toes. Could he have been wrong?
Perhaps, it was just like what Xu Yanwan had said—he was just a heartless man with a cruel personality who didn’t have the right to talk about love.
