Xiao Su remained silent as he looked displeased. Jiang Xiaobai thought she must have got it right.
“Tsk.” Jiang Xiaobai gave him a look. “So, what were you planning on telling me? That you wanted to be accountable and marry me? Are you really that kind of person? If you really told me that, do you think you would be able to face your crush with a clean conscience? More importantly, would you be able to face me with a clean conscience?”
If it were not for Jiang Xiaobai, Xiao Su had almost forgotten about his crush. All of a sudden, he found himself utterly drawn by this lady who was right in front of him. He felt astonished yet odd.
“What do you have to say? Nothing, right? Then I’m leaving now. Please tell your mother the truth by yourself.” After she finished, she stood up and was ready to leave. Suddenly, she felt a grip on her arm. She turned around and found that it was Xiao Su. She frowned. “What do you think you’re doing?”
“I care,” Xiao Su responded firmly with his eyes fixated on her.
“What?” Jiang Xiaobai was confused by this sudden response.
Xiao Su stood up, looked her in the eye, and enunciated, “You may not care about what happened last night, but I do care.”
Time seemed to have frozen at this particular moment, and so did the air around them. After a while, Jiang Xiaobai lifted her head and looked at the eyes on his gorgeous face. “What does that mean? Do you want to marry me?”
Xiao Su swallowed hard while looking at this fair-skinned lady, whose neck had marks left by him from their episode last night. At this moment, she looked particularly alluring, which caused him to be slightly aroused. He felt embarrassed by himself for staring at the marks on her neck. After all, he had already been a jerk last night. I’m too much.
Then, Xiao Su decided to look away, which, in Jiang Xiaobai’s view, carried another meaning. Seeing the horrible look on his face after looking away, she felt like a disgrace for asking such a question. Don’t I already know the answer? He already had someone in his heart when she first came to know him, and it was because of this person that he got drunk and wasted. How would Jiang Xiaobai ever come close to this person’s place in his heart? She had thought too highly of herself!
Jiang Xiaobai laughed dismissively, “You don’t have to answer me. Xiao Su, let me tell you; I wouldn’t marry you even if you wanted to marry me. You don’t deserve me!” She sounded firm and unhesitant, dashing any hopes that Xiao Su might have had.
Once again, Xiao Su frowned and looked her in the eye. This time around, the restless and nervous look on his face had completely disappeared. He found himself squeezing her arm.
“What? Are you getting upset and want to break my arm?” Jiang Xiaobai put up her arms and laughed coldly. “Break it then, so I can tell Mrs. Xiao that you bullied me.”
Very quickly, a red mark was seen on her arm where his grip was. Xiao Su jumped and withdrew his hand. “I’m sorry. I didn’t do that on purpose.”
“Oh, right. You didn’t do it purposely; you only did it intentionally.”
Xiao Su was rendered speechless by her response; he realized that Jiang Xiaobai was indeed too good with words, and there was nothing that he could do to defend himself. It was the same as last night. He was completely defenseless when he was faced with her innocence and unwitting seduction. A few moments later, he turned to her. “There’s no need for you to agitate me. You know that I’d never break your arm.”
Seeing the serious look on his face, Jiang Xiaobai turned away and ignored him.
“You can choose to not care about what happened last night and treat it as nothing, but it meant a lot to me. You’re right; I’m willing to take the responsibility, but it also depends on your willingness. If you’re not willing and think that I’m not worthy of you, I won’t force you.”
Jiang Xiaobai gave him a fierce stare. “Of course you’re not worthy of me. I’m innocent, single, and I don’t even have someone I like. Conversely, you already have someone in your heart, and you got drunk and sad because of her. I’m whole, but you’re broken. Why would you deserve me?”
Xiao Su did not know how to respond. He reckoned that Jiang Xiaobai was going to mention his family background or his looks that did not measure up to her standard. After all, she was beautiful and had a curvaceous body. But what about him? He might not even measure up to her without the scar on his face. Nevertheless, he did have one, and a frightening one no less. This was what he had in mind when Jiang Xiaobai mentioned how he did not deserve to be with her. But, she was actually referring to something else.
Xiao Su did not know what to say anymore. Thinking that she was going to be driven crazy if she continued to carry on this conversation with him, she decided to pick up her belongings. “Anyway, I’ve said what I needed to say. There’s nothing else to say. I wish you the best of luck.” Then, Jiang Xiaobai proceeded to leave.
Looking at her from behind, the despaired Xiao Su subconsciously clenched his fists and let them loose. He closed his eyes, feeling disappointed in himself. Since she’s already made it so clear, there’s no need for me to say anything else. Like she said: she’s a modern woman, and she doesn’t think that she’s been taken advantage of. So, there’s no reason for me to be held accountable.
Not long after Jiang Xiaobai left, the removalist came and knocked on the door. When the door opened, the face that they saw was Xiao Su’s angry face. They were shocked and inquired cautiously, “Hello. Is this Miss Jiang’s place?”
Xiao Su pursed his thin lips and callously stared at them. The few of them at the door felt a chill down their spine. “Ahem. Miss Jiang asked us to come over and help her move.” Just as they thought they had the wrong house, Xiao Su moved sideways with a cold look on his face and let them in. Seeing how unhappy Xiao Su looked and not wanting to offend their customers, all that they could do was carefully move everything while Xiao Su stood in the corner observing them.
Bang! One of them accidentally dropped a chair, prompting Xiao Su to give him a cold look. “Please be gentle. She’s been taking so much care of these things. What are you going to do if you break it?”
“My apologies. It was an accident. I’ll be careful.”The person who dropped the chair apologized right away. “I promise I’ll be extra careful.”
Seeing how clumsy and dull he was, Xiao Su calmed himself down—he just felt bad for Jiang Xiaobai. After some thought, Xiao Su suddenly commented, “Please stop moving.”
The person who dropped the chair thought that Xiao Su was unhappy because of what he did, so he apologized again, “I’m truly sorry. It’s really an accident. Can I compensate you?”
The person in charge then walked up to Xiao Su. “Sir, my cousin is slightly clumsy and it was really an accident. I’d like to offer my apology on behalf of him.”
Xiao Su lifted his head and looked him in the eye. “How much does this trip cost you? I’ll pay you and you can consider this task completed.”
