Jiang Xiaobai felt her mouth start watering when she stared at the delicious food served at the table. I was dragged out of bed the moment I woke up today. I haven’t had anything to eat all day. I’m famished!
Hence, she yanked at Du Xiaoyu’s hand. “Mom, the dishes are served. Let’s eat first. Everything else pales in comparison when there’s so many delicious foods in front of us.”
Du Xiaoyu checked and realized that there were merely two to three dishes served on the table. She couldn’t help but glare at Jiang Xiaobai. “The dishes have not all been served, but you’re already acting like a glutton. Are you a pig? Can you please control your expression? Don’t overeat later.”
Jiang Xiaobai glared at her mother with resentment. “Isn’t eating the main event of the day?”
Du Xiaoyu hesitated before she spoke, “Xiaobai, your boyfriend is here.”
Oh, it’s my fake boyfriend, Jiang Xiaobai thought to herself. She was the first one to pick up her chopsticks when everyone sat down. There were very few people at her table since everyone wanted to sit nearer to the main table. Jiang Xiaobai and Du Xiaoyu were the only ones at the table when they took their seats. Hence, Jiang Xiaobai started eating without hesitating.
Du Xiaoyu’s expression changed drastically. She grabbed onto Jiang Xiaobai’s hand after she ate a piece of meat. “Stop eating. Some people haven’t even taken their seats.”
“Mom, don’t stop me. Everyone went to the other side. They will not sit at our table because we are too far away. We just have to enjoy our meal peacefully now.”
Du Xiaoyu regarded her daughter while feeling rather hopeless. I hope Xiaobai finds a partner to settle down with, but she doesn’t seem to care at all. By the way, Xiao Su is another problem. Didn’t he see his girlfriend sitting here? Or does he not care despite seeing her? No way. Du Xiaoyu couldn’t contain herself after pondering. I would have endured it if it were me, but this is Xiaobai, my daughter. How could I possibly let my daughter suffer in silence?
That was why Du Xiaoyu stood up, but Jiang Xiaobai held onto her. “Where are you going? No one will come over here. Please relax and sit down to enjoy your meal. Besides, so what if someone else joins our table? Should we wait for another half an hour without eating if someone were to join our table after half an hour?”
Du Xioayu answered her, “You should eat first.”
“In that case, where are you going?”
“I’m going to the washroom.”
Jiang Xiaobai did not suspect anything, and so she merely nodded. “Sure, in that case, you should return as soon as possible. I can’t promise you that I wouldn’t finish all the food here if you return late.”
Du Xiaoyu was astounded when she heard that. She stared at her daughter in silence because she was at a loss for words. Her boyfriend is right there, but she wouldn’t even go see him, nor is he coming over to see her; besides, she’s actually still stuffing her face with food. That’s so pitiful.
However, Jiang Xiaobai was oblivious to her mother’s thoughts. If she had known about it, she would have screamed, ‘Mom, I am not pitiful! I honestly am not pitiful!’
Du Xiaoyu pretended as though she was going to the washroom, but she changed directions abruptly on the way there. Instead, she made her way to the main table. Jiang Yanke was at the main table, so when Du Xiaoyu walked toward his direction, he immediately stood up when he saw his wife. “Honey, I was just about to join you after chatting with mother. Where is Xiaobai?”
Du Xiaoyu smiled faintly. She greeted everyone before answering Jiang Yanke, “Xiaobai is eating. Is your phone with you? I forgot to bring my phone; I need to borrow yours to make a phone call.”
Everyone at the table focused on Du Xiaoyu when she said that. Du Xiaoyu was doing this on purpose. I’ve met Xiao Su before; he can’t possibly not recognize me.
On the other hand, the honest Jiang Yanke took his wife’s request literally, and so he handed her his phone. After that, he whispered, “You are always leaving things all over the place. How can you lose your phone?”
Du Xiaoyu chuckled sweetly before pretending to make a call, and she walked out to make the phone call. After chatting for a bit, she returned to the table to hand the phone back to Jiang Yanke. At that moment, something flashed through her eyes because she bumped into Xiao Su, who was sitting beside President Zhao. Xiao Su was staring at her, while Du Xiaoyu remained motionless as she stared at him unwaveringly.
A second passed, and then two seconds went by. Xiao Su nodded at her. “Madam.”
Everyone turned to Xiao Su abruptly because they heard him speak suddenly. President Zhao asked in surprise, “Are you two acquainted?”
Du Xiaoyu was slightly angry. He’s only greeting me now? Hmph, I don’t think I want to acknowledge him now.
In all honesty, Xiao Su hadn’t come up with an explanation because he wasn’t quite sure of Jiang Xiaobai’s situation. Besides, he was just pretending to be her boyfriend to fool her mother just so that she would stop forcing her to go on blind dates. However, now that all her relatives are here, would I cause more problems for her in the future if I were to claim that I’m her boyfriend?
After weighing his options, Xiao Su finally settled with a diplomatic answer. He looked at Du Xiaoyu when he answered, “Mm-hmm, I am friends with Madam Jiang’s daughter.”
President Zhao was rendered speechless when he heard that. He recalled the way Xiao Su stood at the entrance of the birthday feast earlier before glancing at Third Madam Jiang, and something struck him suddenly. “So you knew the girl you were looking at earlier?” No wonder he was staring at her for such a long time. There was even a trace of smile in his eyes and lips. I can’t believe I was foolish enough to ask him if he needed me to make an introduction. President Zhao suddenly felt extremely foolish. But luckily, I dragged him along to have some alcohol.
“Friend?” President Zhao smiled pointedly. “Are you sure you two are just friends?”
No one else at the table could follow what was going on because Xiao Su was invited to the main table. It was obvious that he was an important person with a powerful background. Hence, they did not expect him to know Jiang Xiaobai.
Jiang Yoo paused before commenting with a laugh, “Well, I’ve always wondered why Xiaobai doesn’t have a boyfriend. It turns out—”
“Yoo!” Master Jiang stopped him sternly. “Didn’t you hear what Mr. Xiao said? He said they’re just friends. Stop spouting nonsense while embarrassing others.”
Friends? Jiang Yoo did not get to finish his sentence. Didn’t you see how he paused when he said the word ‘friends’? There must be something going on between the two of them.
On the other side, Du Xiaoyu was upset after listening to Xiao Su’s reply. How dare he avoid admitting that he is Xiaobai’s boyfriend in front of the whole Jiang family! What is he doing? Is he unsatisfied with my daughter, Xiaobai? Du Xiaoyu smirked when she thought of that. She mocked him directly, “Forget it. Xiaobai is not fortunate enough to be the great Mr. Xiao’s girlfriend.” After that, she ignored everyone else’s reaction as she turned around to leave.
The rest of the people at the table exchanged glances while looking bewildered. Jiang Yanke had no idea about this, and so he confessed that he wasn’t quite sure what was happening when others asked him about it.
Jiang Xiaobai was biting into a piece of chicken wing when she saw her mother walking back to the table furiously.
