At the sound of his voice, Jiang Xiaobai started to feel more at ease. She looked up at him and saw the reassuring look he was giving her, then nodded her head. At the same time, she looked at Mrs. Jiang and muttered, “I guess I’ll go and cut the fruits. Don’t bully him!” She kept looking at Xiao Su as she reluctantly entered the kitchen.
Xiao Su kept a smile on his face the whole time and gave Jiang Xiaobai unending looks of reassurance. However, Mrs. Jiang saw every small movement and exchange between them. She glared at Jiang Xiaobai and scolded in her mind, Stupid girl.
After Jiang Xiaobai entered the kitchen, although she did not want to, she started to cut up the fruits. She was doing it very quickly for fear that Xiao Su would expose her. As soon as she finished cutting them, she held the plate in her hands and went out. It only took her around five minutes. Before she went out, she leaned along the side of the door to eavesdrop on them. But she did not hear a sound, which perplexed her. Are they already done talking?
When she went into the living room, they were not talking to each other and the atmosphere felt slightly unusual. She put the plate of fruits on the coffee table, then ran to Xiao Su’s side and sat down next to him. Her gaze kept going back and forth between her mother and Xiao Su.
“Alright, stop looking!” Mrs. Jiang called her out. “They say that women would eventually be married off, and they’re not wrong; you couldn’t even cut a piece of fruit properly before rushing out here! If he’s really your boyfriend, who are you to stop me from bullying him?”
Jiang Xiaobai refuted, “Who knows? Aren’t you suspicious of us? If you scare him away, where am I going to find another boyfriend like him?” She grabbed Xiao Su’s arm and buried herself next to him like a little chick. “Isn’t that right?”
Xiao Su did not respond. He looked down at her and saw her blinking earnestly at him. Then, he reached out to sweep away the loose strands of hair around her face then agreed dotingly. It was just a minor action, but she felt her heart skip a beat and began to speed up. What’s happening today? We were this close that night too, but I don’t think I felt this way then.
“Fine then. Can you prove that he’s your boyfriend?” Mrs. Jiang crossed her arms and looked calmly at the lovebirds in front of her. “If you can’t prove it, then you’ll still have to go on a blind date.”
Jiang Xiaobai almost flew into a rage when she heard that. “How can you say that, Mom? Talking about a blind date in front of my boyfriend. Do you not want me to be happy?”
Mrs. Jiang sneered. “Did you think that just because you brought a random man in front of me, held his hand, and hugged him, I’ll believe you two are really a couple?”
“Why not? Why don’t you believe it?”
“It’s not like there isn’t a way for me to believe you.” Mrs. Jiang’s eyes shifted as though she was coming up with an idea. Seeing her mother like that, Jiang Xiaobai had a vague sense of doubt. Why does it feel like Mom is about to come up with something bad?
Then, Mrs. Jiang’s following words almost made Jiang Xiaobai flip the table. “Do you dare to kiss him in front of me?”
Jiang Xiaobai’s eyes widened. “Mom!”
Mrs. Jiang looked indifferent. “Why? Aren’t you two a couple? What’s wrong with a little kiss? My dear daughter, why don’t you stop this lousy performance of yours? Let your friend go home and just go on a blind date as you’re told. I’ve found many outstanding men who are just waiting to go on a date with you.”
Many of them? Jiang Xiaobai was agitated upon hearing the number of people. At that moment, she was strongly against going on a blind date. Clenching her teeth, she looked at Mrs. Jiang. “You’ll believe me if I kissed him?”
Mrs. Jiang simply smiled without saying anything. Jiang Xiaobai turned to look at Xiao Su, and he met her eyes. She’s not really thinking of kissing me, is she? He frowned and started to say something, but she grabbed his hand. Before he could respond, she leaned in and kissed the corner of his lips.
It was not a proper kiss. From Mrs. Jiang’s perspective, it looked like Jiang Xiaobai had kissed Xiao Su on the lips when she had actually kissed the corner of it. Even though their lips did touch slightly, it was the best that Jiang Xiaobai could do.
On the other hand, Xiao Su froze for a moment when he was kissed and something odd flashed across his eyes. However, Jiang Xiaobai quickly pulled away and buried herself in his embrace, then looked at Mrs. Jiang grumpily. “Is this enough for you, Mom? Your request is way out of line. Even though we’re a couple, kissing and things like this are private. Don’t you know?”
Mrs. Jiang was quite astonished as she did not expect to witness that. This daughter of mine is rather brazen. She was going to probe a bit more but she fell silent in that instance. After staring intently at Xiao Su for a while, she waved her hand and said, “Okay. You passed.”
Jiang Xiaobai’s eyes glimmered. “Does that mean I don’t have to go on blind dates anymore?”
Mrs. Jiang shot back, “Why? Do you still want to go even though you have a boyfriend?”
“No, no, no!” Jiang Xiaobai waved her hands with a big smile on her face then pulled Xiao Su’s hand. “Since it’s all settled, we’ll get going now.”
Mrs. Jiang was thinking of making her stay but, at that moment, she did not stop them and just let them go. With that, Jiang Xiaobai dragged him along and left. As soon as they got in the elevator, Jiang Xiaobai immediately let go of Xiao Su’s hand. She fiddled with her nose lightly then looked at him. “Um… Sorry for doing that so suddenly.”
Xiao Su did not respond after pulling himself back together. He did not expect that sudden move from Jiang Xiaobai earlier. Her soft lips suddenly came on to him, and she even had a faint fragrance on her. He had been completely out of it. At the moment, he was staring at her with eyebrows furrowed together tightly.
Upon seeing the look on his face, she coughed intentionally, then quickly coaxed, “Hey, don’t get mad. I didn’t mean to kiss you. But you saw what my mom is like. If I hadn’t kissed you, I would have had to go on blind dates with all those men. Since you’re already here, a little kiss wasn’t too much, right? Besides, it was just an act!”
His expression turned gloomy as though clouds were hanging over him. “Just because it was an act, you were allowed to kiss me as you pleased?”
She tapped her fingers together pitifully. “Didn’t I tell you it was because I was left with no other choice? I didn’t want to do it either. You should know that it was my first kiss…”
First kiss…
