Heartbroken, Nicholas held Tessa’s hand and defended her, saying “I’ve said it before—I need a life partner. I want a soul mate, not a business partner or a subordinate. Or are you possibly thinking that the future of the Sawyer Family lies in the hands of a woman?”
His words were indeed personal, which undoubtedly caused Remus’ face to turn beyond grim.
“Nicholas, how dare you speak to your grandfather like that?!” Tobias reprimanded.
Still indifferent, Nicholas wanted to continue, but Tessa tugged on him while shaking her head.
“Admittedly, the wealth of the Sawyer Family can have someone want for nothing, and this might be why many women want to marry into the purple. However, I’m not one of them, and this isn’t the kind of life I want. I can understand why you’d have such a misunderstanding,” said Tessa word by word as she fixed her gaze on Remus.
“I have my own dream to pursue, and I can honestly tell you getting pregnant isn’t part of the plan. But now that I am, I have no plans of giving the child up. The baby is proof of our love.”
Remus was somewhat at a loss for words, looking grim when he saw how Tessa felt her belly.
However, Tessa wasn’t bothered, continuing to speak her thoughts earnestly. She said, “Nicholas and I stumbled many times before our relationship finally became stable, and I’m sure you’re aware of the incidents that happened in between. He doesn’t want me to suffer any grievances, and I don’t want to put him in a difficult position either. Hence, I’ll strive to be excellent and worthy of him. I hope you can accept me.”
Timothy couldn’t sit back anymore at this point, backing his sister up. “I get what you’re trying to tell us now, Old Master Sawyer. My sister might not be born into the purple, but I will work hard and move the Reinhart Family up into the ranks of the elite, becoming a family that’s worthy of the Sawyers. Even if the goal seems impossible now, it’s not going to stop me.”
Tessa couldn’t be more touched to hear her brother’s pledge.
Meanwhile, Gregory had come downstairs at this time.
Remus and the Sawyer couple were worried that their plan would foil with the child around, so they purposefully sent Gregory to his room. However, who’d have thought the child was a quick-witted one, having ditched the maid who was supposed to look after him?
“Great-Grandpa, I like Miss Tessa being my mommy. Please don’t make her leave,” Gregory begged his great-grandfather as he stood before Tessa.
Of course, Remus wasn’t pleased to see that even Gregory was protective of Tessa, and he chastised, “Who brought Gregory down here?!”
“No one did. I snuck out. Great-Grandpa, please don’t make Miss Tessa leave. I want Miss Tessa to be my mommy.”
Gregory made a moue at Remus once more, his big, crystal-clear eyes pooling with tears, looking like he would bawl the second Remus refused.
As angry as Remus currently was, he couldn’t blow a fuse in front of Gregory even if he wanted to.
Meanwhile, Tessa’s eyes turned red-rimmed with oncoming tears as she looked at the little fellow currently defending her, beyond touched.
With that, she took a deep breath, forced back her tears, and looked straight into Remus’ eyes. “If you mind my status and worry that I’ll be an embarrassment, Nicholas and I can keep our marriage a secret until the day you think I’m good enough.”
She had thought her compromise would get Remus’ agreement in return even if he still wasn’t pleased. However, who’d have thought she only received a sneer from him? “I have to hand it to you, Miss Reinhart. You sure know how to manipulate. No wonder these two are bewitched.”
“I never bewitched them. I only ever returned sincerity with sincerity.”
“Sincerity with sincerity? Doesn’t it still ultimately mean you’re manipulative?” Remus snorted disdainfully, his tone filled with nothing but contempt.
Tessa chewed on her lips, speechless. She didn’t expect Remus to be so obstinate.
Of course, Remus didn’t know what Tessa was thinking, and a glint of light flashed across his eyes as he looked at the silent young woman. “I will not recognize this marriage even if you two end up getting married. Also, I want you to comply with one thing.”
