Chapter 1347 Pretending
“This is impossible. It must be fake. That person must be impersonating him.” As Desmond spoke, he got to his feet and walked out of the building. However, he did not dare to reveal himself right away.
Desmond wanted to make sure if the visitor was actually Jared. If it were really the latter, then he would have to come up with a plan.
Desmond took a peep outside when he arrived at the door. Meanwhile, Jared was standing right in front of the door, frowning. “What’s up with Desmond? Why is he dilly-dallying when he already knows I’m here?” he mumbled under his breath.
Jared had already announced his arrival long ago, but he was still not granted entry. All that made his temper flare.
Losing his patience, he released his spiritual sense and immediately detected Desmond, who was spying on him.
Jared was confused by the discovery. He could not understand why Desmond was secretly observing him instead of letting him in when the latter already knew about his arrival.
Could this punk have done something wrong?
At the same time, Desmond’s legs went weak, and his forehead was covered with sweat as soon as he confirmed it was Jared standing in front of the door.
Noting Desmond’s odd behavior, the disciple called out softly, “Lord Cowper…”
“Bring Mr. Chance in. And don’t tell him I already know about his arrival,” informed Desmond.
The disciple nodded and left. Meanwhile, Desmond quickly returned to the hall and took several deep breaths.
Feeling it was about time for him to head out, Desmond marched toward the exit. Coincidentally, Jared had stepped into the hall.
Desmond said politely, “Mr. Chance! I was about to go out to welcome you. I didn’t expect you to have entered. Please, have a seat.”
Desmond poured Jared a cup of coffee. After all, the former had witnessed Jared’s capabilities with his own eyes in the past.
Jared eyed Desmond coldly without blinking, sending chills down the latter’s spine. Even beads of sweat were trickling from his forehead.
“Mr. Chance, may I know what’s the purpose of your sudden visit at this hour?” Desmond asked anxiously.
“Lord Cowper, did Ms. Jingle come here today?” asked Jared.
“Yes. I had something to discuss with Lady Jingle. However, she left before nightfall. What’s wrong? Did she not return to the palace?” Desmond asked, feigning surprise.
Jared nodded. “She didn’t. Can I know what was the important matter you had to discuss with Ms. Jingle?”
Desmond tried his best to recollect himself before explaining, “Oh, it’s nothing much. It’s just that Mr. Rider, I mean Colton of the Rider family, came looking for me a few days ago. He wanted me to introduce him to her, but I rejected him. I was worried the Rider family would stir trouble for me, so I invited Lady Jingle to come here and discuss it. I wanted to get her opinion on how we should deal with them in case they come looking for me for trouble.”
“The Rider family?” Jared knitted his brows. He had no knowledge about the Rider family of Wildefield.
Then again, there were countless sects and families in the Southwest Region. Thus, it was normal for Jared not to know about all of them.
“The Rider family is the most wealthy family in Wildefield. In the past, both their family and my sect would never stand in each other’s way. Now that Divine Beast Sect’s powers have been reduced greatly…” Desmond trailed off and stopped talking. Nonetheless, Jared knew what Desmond wanted to say.
Without their powers, they would naturally be bullied by others.
That was the harsh reality of the martial arts world. Everything depended on how powerful a person or an organization was.
“Could Ms. Jingle be abducted by the Rider family?” Jared asked.
“Uh… I’m not sure about this.” Desmond shook his head.
Jared eyed Desmond for a while, making the latter feel extremely anxious.
Thankfully, Jared quickly retracted his gaze and said, “Lord Cowper, please inform me if you have any news about Ms. Jingle’s whereabouts.”
“Don’t worry, Mr. Chance. I’ll definitely inform you if I find her.” Desmond nodded.
